Thank you for publishing this. Our own Sydney, very young at just 7 years old, passed away this July 5th. A lot of the descriptions of Sidney the Retriever here could also be said of our little girl, Sydney the Pug. She also "stood out" amongst 3 other dogs and everyone remembered her. She was even cast in a movie! Sadly, a routine dental cleaning went badly and she died of fluid in her lungs (although we are not sure if there was an underlying disease we did not know about). Such a good girl all the way to the end--she waited for us to come see her back at the animal hospital before her little heart gave out. Thankfully we did not have to make the decision to "put her to sleep", as I know many pet owners have to suffer through. God bless our loved ones and may they all be running happily together until we see them again.

This was one of the most beautiful and most truthful commentary I have ever heard on TV. I have shared my life with pets since I was born and understand this relationship I have had and still have is sincerely the best relationships in my life. With many stresses of my life (including the loss of my 22 year old son) it was always to my dogs that I turned to. They understand pain and anguish and their sitting next tome, or sharing my pillow, allows me to look into the eyes that deeply love me, that will not be angry when I have been ill and cannot take them for long walks, nor when I can't take them in the car with me. I love to sit and watch my miniature Dachshund sleep so comfortably and secure - and my standard Dachshund sprawls all over the bed and dreams of eating (a guess). I have never purchased an animal - gladly adopting them from our local shelter. My favorite saying has been for years - To know that I have caused a frightened, lonely animal to have comfort, love and peace, I believe everything in my life has been worth it and I can leave this earth knowing I have pleased God.

I understand the sentiment that logically it made sense to put my Shiba Inu mix Cassi down but my heart is still in pieces almost a month later. She was 16 years +4 months and the best traveling companion a girl could ask for. So full of life, such an independent spirit, so protective, and such a giver of unconditional love. Her condition deteriorated daily the last few weeks. What helps with my guilty feelings are the two statements I and the vet made that stand out in my mind... I told her "I don't want her to suffer" (bottom line) and the vet told me "You're doing the right thing"... Only time will convince me of the last... God bless people everywhere who love their pets and go through the sadness of saying good-bye to them forever...

I do agree with a lot of what you're saying, however I could have easily been the proud mom telling you what my dog was and I probably wouldn't have gone into the details of how I got her. I do have a pikingese chihuahua mix and I got her from a rescue organization. I didn't and never would give my money to a puppy mill. I respect what you stand for I just think that you sound like you're stereotyping anyone with a small dog like we are all Paris Hilton stuck up wannabees. Some people just like small dogs or they suit their living situation and lifestyle. I appologize if I am completely off base. I am simply tired of people assuming that small dogs are fashion assesories to anyone that owns one. My dog means so much more than that.

Betsy,
I love this! I just spent 20 minutes on the Martha Speaks website. What a great way to teach young children how to respect and care for a dog.

I'm so glad you are back. There are so many reasons not to buy from a breeder/pet store. You do a wonderful job on educating people. Don't beat yourself up over one person who doesn't get it. Kiss Ranger for me.

I read about this in a dog magazine and it made me cry w/joy...I am soooo happy that someone has started a new trend that is helping to save the lives of rescued animals! I believe that God gave us the privelege of protecting these animals.. they were made by him and they each have there individual personality and feelings and emotions! Thank you Woof Worx for all you are doing!
